When searching for programs to watch on TV, it can be difficult to find ones suitable for your child on the Autism Spectrum. Thankfully, the staff at FOCUS Center for Autism are here to help! We have compiled a list of programs that can teach your child about growing up and navigating the world. Some of them are shows you may have watched as a child!
Learn about Language
Dan L. suggested “Mork and Mindy” as a great program for kids on the Autism Spectrum. Starring the late Robin Williams, “Mork and Mindy” chronicles a wacky alien sent to Earth to observe its residents (IMDB). Dan says, “This show is very useful for teaching about metaphors, sarcasm, and social expectations!” The following clip is a great example of how this program uses language to create humorous situations:
Life Lessons on Television
There are many programs on TV that will teach your child lessons they can use throughout their life. Liza P. suggests “7th Heaven”, which was honored by the Parents Television Council as one of the most family-friendly programs on television from 1996 to 2005 (Wikipedia). Liza says that this program deals with tough topics such as school, friends, and family really well. This clip from Season 5 discusses honesty and the power of one’s reputation:
Emma K. adds “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” as another program to watch. Emma mentions that this program displays the relationship between choices and consequences. For example, this clip shows the results of not following directions and taking advice from others:
Many television programs have characters that your child can relate to in one way or another. One of these programs is “The Wonder Years”; a FOCUS favorite! While this program can be considered a period piece, depicting life in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the trials and tribulations of Kevin Arnold are ones that are experienced by children today.
