Week 5 of our Summer Program was awesome! Our campers had brand new adventures that took them outside of their comfort zones and got them in touch with nature!

High-Flying Fun at the Wilderness School

P1060929Have you ever wanted to fly? Our campers had that experience this week at the Wilderness School. They went ziplining! As part of their Adventure Education curriculum, the Wilderness School has an on-site ropes course and ziplining apparatus. These activities increase teamwork skills and build confidence. They’re also very fun!

Under the supervision of Wilderness School staff, our campers climbed up to the ziplining platform, attached their hooks, and soared through the air with the grace of a bird! Ziplining not only gave them an exciting new experience, but also served an important need; sensory integration! According to Markus Jarrow, OTR/L, activities like ziplining activate the vestibular system, which helps with spatial awareness and movement. It is why miniature ziplines and swings are often used in Occupational Therapy!

Experiencing Nature

P1060990On Friday, our campers visited Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton; a part of The Children’s Museum.  Founded in 1948, Roaring Brook Nature Center offers numerous exhibits on Connecticut’s changing wildlife, how Native Americans interacted with the natural world, and the Farmington River!  They also maintain five miles of nature trails in adjacent Werner’s Woods; which was given to the State of Connecticut in 1964.

Our campers experienced much of what Roaring Brook Nature Center has to offer during their visit. They met a turtle and a slithery snake, went on a nature walk, and relaxed in a replica Native American Longhouse!

Fun with The Gamers Box!

Finally, our campers had a visit from Michael Hill and The Gamers Box! The Gamers Box is a mobile video arcade with something for everyone! Our campers look forward to Michael’s annual visit. His patience and enthusiasm for gaming make him a huge hit at FOCUS!

Our Summer Program is almost over! Keep your eyes peeled for our final Summer Program blog!
